This MTB ride takes you first into the realm of the red kite, where you can enjoy a magnificent view, and then into an idyllic valley known as Bütgenbacher Heck. On a technical level, it is an ideal beginners’ tour for mountain bike newcomers.
You start at the church and drive to the big roundabout of Bütgenbach. Follow the signs and drive towards Schoppen. After 3.8 km you leave the road to Schoppen and drive into the forest. The wide path in the fir forest soon turns into a narrow single trail in a deciduous forest (very beautiful in autumn!).
A good kilometre further on, the ascent to the highest point of the valley begins, which lies between “ZurSchleid” (=Schoppen) and Möderscheid. Here you are guaranteed to see red kites circling over the landscape in search of prey. The view here is wonderful!
The descent, just like the ascent, is along an asphalt agricultural road. Shift into a small gear in time, because at the end of the descent, immediately after the sharp left turn, there is a short but steep ascent (at km 7.7). Enjoy the wonderful panorama!
Bütgenbacher Heck is now very close by. You can reach this idyllic valley via a wonderful (even for mountainbike beginners not all too difficult) single trail. Through the woods you return to the Wirtzfelder Weg, which takes you back to the starting point in Bütgenbach.
